Annual Full Discharge Test

Once a year, every emergency lighting unit must undergo a full duration discharge test. This means running each unit on battery power for its full rated duration - typically 90 minutes for standard emergency luminaires. The purpose is to confirm that batteries can sustain the required illumination level for the entire rated period.

This is where most failures are detected. Batteries degrade over time, and a unit that passes a brief simulated test may fail well before the 90-minute mark during a full discharge.

  • Lamp failure. LED technology has improved this significantly, but older fluorescent emergency fittings still fail at a higher rate. If your building has older fittings, upgrading to LED is worth considering.
  • Charging circuit failure. The circuit that keeps the battery charged between power failures can fail silently. The fitting looks normal until a power failure occurs and the battery is flat.
  • Physical damage. Fittings in high-traffic areas, loading docks, and car parks take a beating. Damaged housings can compromise the seal and allow moisture ingress, which corrodes internal components.
  • Incorrect installation. Emergency luminaires installed in the wrong locations, at incorrect mounting heights, or without adequate coverage create compliance gaps even if the fittings themselves are functional.

A compliant emergency lighting inspection involves:

  1. Visual inspection of all emergency luminaires and exit signs for physical damage, correct mounting, and cleanliness
  2. Functional test of each fitting - confirming it activates when mains power is simulated as failed
  3. Battery condition assessment - checking charge levels and battery age
  4. For annual tests: full duration discharge test with timing records
  5. Lux level measurements to confirm illumination meets the minimum standard along escape routes
  6. Documentation of all results in a logbook, including any defects identified and corrective actions required
