Most electrical work we do involves safety, compliance, or major systems. But some of the jobs homeowners appreciate most are the smaller ones: adding a power point where there isn’t one, swapping outdated switches for something modern, or installing USB charging outlets that actually work. Here’s a rundown of what’s available and worth considering.
USB-A and USB-C power points have a USB charging port built directly into the face plate, alongside the standard GPO. No adapter needed. For bedside tables, home offices, kitchens, and anywhere you charge devices regularly, these are a simple and popular upgrade.
USB-C points in particular are increasingly useful as most modern phones, laptops, and tablets charge via USB-C. They typically deliver faster charging than a standard phone charger through an adapter. They look the same as a standard power point and fit in the same wall plate.
Not enough power points is one of the most common complaints in older homes. The solution is almost always simpler than people expect: run a new cable from the nearest circuit and add a double GPO where you need it. Common requests include:
Outdoor power points need to be weatherproof and on a circuit protected by an RCD. This isn’t optional, it’s a safety requirement.
Smart switches replace your standard light switch and connect to your home Wi-Fi, letting you control lights from your phone or through a voice assistant. They can be grouped into rooms, set to schedules, and controlled remotely.
They’re a genuine convenience upgrade for main living areas and popular for outdoor lighting as well. Installation by a licensed electrician takes about 20 to 30 minutes per switch. Not all smart switches work with all lighting types, so it’s worth checking compatibility before you buy the switches.
Dimmers are a simpler option if you want adjustable lighting without the smart home side. Just make sure any dimmer you install is rated for LED globes, otherwise you’ll get buzzing or flickering.
If you’re mounting a TV on the wall and don’t want cables running down it, an in-wall cable kit with a GPO and HDMI pass-through directly behind the screen gives a clean result. We’re often asked to do this as part of renovation fitouts.
