Expert advice from Leading Edge Electrical & Air Conditioning — your licensed Sunshine Coast electricians.
The Sunshine Coast runs warm and humid for most of the year. Summer temperatures regularly hit the high 30s, and the humidity makes it feel hotter again. Unlike cooler southern cities where you need equal heating and cooling grunt, up here the priority is efficient cooling that keeps running reliably through a long, hot summer. Heating matters too, but it’s secondary.
Getting the system type and size right for the conditions makes a big difference to both comfort and your power bill.
Split systems are by far the most common air conditioning choice on the Sunshine Coast, and for good reason. One indoor wall unit, one outdoor compressor, and you’ve got precise climate control for a single room or open-plan space. They’re cost-effective to install, efficient to run, and there’s a unit to suit almost any room size.
Advantages: Lower upfront cost, excellent energy efficiency, quiet, precise temperature control per room.
Ideal for: Bedrooms, living areas, home offices, and open-plan spaces up to around 60m².
Sizing note: For most Sunshine Coast rooms, allow 0.06 to 0.08 kW per m² of floor space. A 20m² bedroom usually needs a 1.5 to 2.5kW unit; a 50m² living area needs 4 to 6kW. North-facing windows, ceiling height, and insulation all affect the right size, which is why a proper site measure matters before you buy.
A multi-head split system connects multiple indoor units to a single outdoor compressor. Each room gets its own controller, and you’re not cluttering the outside of the house with multiple compressors. It’s a good fit for homes where you want to cool 2 to 5 rooms independently but ducting isn’t practical.
Best for: Homes on concrete slab, older-style rooflines where running ducting is difficult, or anywhere you want zoned comfort without the ducted price tag.
Ducted systems push conditioned air through ceiling ducts to every room, with a central controller or zone system managing the temperature. For larger homes or new builds, it’s the premium option.
Advantages: Consistent climate across every room, only vents visible, clean finish.
Worth knowing: Higher install cost, needs roof space for the ductwork, and ideally planned at the build stage rather than retrofitted.
Not every brand handles the Queensland climate equally well. Based on what we install and service across the Sunshine Coast, these consistently perform:
